Starchaser Network - To The Bar And Beyond!

 About Us

What we are, and what we do.

ok, for sake of clarity, and to save my sanity, i'm going to break this section down into several

sections, in the style of a FAQ sheet. If you are looking for answers, here is where to find them.

- Ok, Just what the devil is this "Network" you keep spouting off about?

The Scout Network is the Scout Association's provision for those aged between 18 and 25: it is the fifth

section of The Scout Association’s 6-25 youth programme. The aims and principles of the Network are

the same as those of The Scout Association, as defined and published in the Policy, Organisation and

      Rules.

- Come again?

Ok, basically the Network is a countrywide scheme, which is set up to allow 18-25 year olds to get

involved in a wide range of activities, awards and projects, or just socialise. The key idea behind

network is flexibility - how you take part (if at all) is very much up to the individual. Best of all, this is not

just restricted to existing members of the scout association - Essentially, anyone within the target age

range could just walk in off the street and join. Well, almost - we have to conform to Scout association

policy, and that means that every member over the age of 18 (ie, all Leaders & Network members) must

     be CRB checked.

- So what exactly do you get up to?

Put simply, anything we want! Networks are involved in activities as wide ranging as kayaking, rock

climbing,  water skiing, journeying to far-flung destinations as inspiring as Chile, Libya and Italy,

working with young people, running national/international events, helping within the local community,

competeing in transcontinental road races... the list of activities, projects and events is almost endless.

You can also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, The Scout Award Scheme (including the

prestigious Queen's Scout Award), and gain various outdoor oriented qualifications.

By joining Scout Network a whole world of opportunity opens up to you, and since the network's

programme id decided by it's members, what you and your Network do is up to you.

- Sounds good so far, but won't this cost me a small fortune?

Well, that is entirely up to you - all events we run are paid for individually, and if you do absolutely

every single event going, then it will obviously hurt your wallet.

We charge every member £40 per year (less than £1 per week) - this covers the £30 per year

insurance for each member, and allows us to pay for equipment & a meeting place for the group.

- Ok, i think i get the idea, but why for the love of mike did you call the unit Starchaser ?

Because apart from the Moors Murders and Harold Shipman, the only thing the area is famous for is

"Starchaser Industries" (see the links page). Given that some other networks within the country have

named themselves in an even more outlandish fashion (ie, "BENT", "SNOT" & "Toxic Monkeys" to name

but a few), our name isn't too bad. Just think, we could have named ourselves "Murder Inc." or something

    similarly tasteless........

- er, ok............ you lot are a bunch of scifi wierdos.

No we bloody well aren't! Next question!

- Where do you meet, and how often?

Networks’ meeting times are flexible, and are arranged to suit their members. There are different types

of Network – some meet to serve the needs of an area and take part in a wide variety of activities, whilst

others exist to fulfil certain roles (such as a service crew at the local campsite). Others concentrate on a

single activity such as rock climbing, like a club but with access to events provided by other networks.

In our case, we are an events based network - although we come together for activities, actual meetings

may be infrequent,  with only the exec meeting up on a regular basis every month. Meetings are only

organised as and when  we need them, (eg: to meet new members). Most discussion/organisation takes

place via the forum. To find out about the next meeting, either consult the diary (link on the bar to the left),

look for an announcement on the forum, or use the enquiries link on the contacts page.

- Can i join?

Are you between the ages of 18 and 25? If so, the answer is yes. Although some Network members are

also Leaders and Assistants, others have never have been involved in Scouting before. Now is the time

to start. When you become a Network member, you can take part in almost any activity or event organised

by the 237(and rising!) Networks across the UK.

    What more can you want?

 - How?

Contact us, either in the forum or by using the enquiries link on the contacts page.

- I would like to sell you software/warez/penile extensions/yada yada yada......

    NO!

Anyone attempting to hawk these offers around, either via the website or on the forum, will be

banned & reported. We do not tolerate spam.
